Along the way, I have picked up a few lessons.

🚨STOP blindly recommending dairy! 🥛

If you work with female clients …

and you’re giving them all dairy, you might be making a handful of them worse.

This meta-analysis assessed 48 studies, involving over 22,680,000 participants.

It found the prevalence of Hashimoto’s in women was between 4.8-25.8%.

Now this varied by region and socioeconomic level.

This means 1/20 all the way up to a slim, but possible, 1/4 female clients may have hashimoto’s.

With Hashimoto’s, there is an established cross-reactivity with lactose, meaning that individuals with hashimoto’s may be prone to autoimmune flare ups when consuming this sugar molecule.

This study found that 75.9% of women with hashimoto’s were lactose intolerant.

After following a lactose-free diet, individuals with hashimoto’s experienced significantly decreased TSH levels, a marker of better thyroid stability.

Further more, clients which are prescribed certain thyroid medication, may equally be unknowingly exposed to lactose due to its formation.

It is reported that individuals taking lactose-containing levothyroxine whilst equally being lactose intolerant, often experience reduced bioavailability in the medication, reducing its effectiveness and causing them to wrongfully take higher doses.

Is your hair thinning, do you have headaches, weight gain, cold intolerance and slower metabolism but your labs say you’re fine?

This research from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey looked at a cohort of 17,353 individuals, over the age of 12 within the US.

In the disease-free population (those without thyroid dysfunction, disease, or taking medication) TSH was found to be an average of 1.49 for both genders.

The conventional reference range is between 0.5-5.0, which is clearly too broad.

When excluding risk factors such as pregnancy, oestrogens, androgens, lithium and antibodies …

The mean TSH level for the disease-free population was lower at 1.39.

Looking at this paper in isolation, it indicates that we should consider using a tighter reference range for TSH.

Something much closer to 1.39.

When looking into ethnicity, black individuals had an even lower TSH level that represented a disease-free population at 1.19.

TSH is generally found to be higher in females, increases with age, and is greater in white individuals.

This underlines the importance of bio-individual ranges based on the age, gender, and ethnicity of the clients you work with.
